St. John’s Church

While it served as the parish church of Eichstätt in the early Middle Ages, St. John's Church appears in sources from 1279 simply as a dilapidated "old parish church in the cemetery." The three-aisled hall church preserved today, in late Gothic style, was built from 1520 to 1527 on behalf of the cathedral chapter, incorporating the remnants of an earlier, Romanesque structure. After its deconsecration in 1708, the space was initially used as a market hall and commercial building. Today, beneath its venerable vaults, a variety of exhibitions and events take place.
